San Juan, Puerto Rico
This was John’s second trip to Old San Juan, my first. I was amazed at how beautiful and clean it was. Full of statues, history, friendly people and old world charm. There was something cool around every corner, so, we wandered.
The highlights of our day included:
The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is definitely a “must see” if you are visiting Old San Juan. This beautiful structure was built of wood in 1521 and then later rebuilt in 1540 when a hurricane destroyed the original. Within the cathedral is the tomb of Ponce de Leon which awed us to be that close to a major player that shaped world history.
Entrance to the cathedral is free, but no food or drinks are allowed since it is an active church. And please, if you are guy, remember to remove your hat when inside. It’s a church, for heaven’s sake!
Old San Juan is definitely not dull, color wise, that is. Each new avenue, promenade and alley produces a plethora of structures that look like they belong in a Crayola jumbo box of colors.
John had a blast capturing the eye candy with his camera.
The blue brick roads of Old San Juan matched my blue “suede” Vibram 5 Fingers running shoes!
How cool is that?
Medalla Beer is the “national” beer of Puerto Rico is available EVERYWHERE. And, it’s really good too.
Sells for about $1.50-$2 US at most bars and cantinas.
On the way back to the hotel we moseyed down the seawall walkway.
It wasn’t as crowded as the city streets and absolutely breathtaking!
SPOILER/WARNING: If watching Tipi Hedren being chased by a gazillion birds in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, The Birds, freaked you out, well, you might want to skip this one.
Being pigeon perches was definitely not on our bucket list, or even something we would consider a fun thing to do, but we’re really glad we stumbled onto this place.
The park is located at the end of Cristo Street next to Capilla del Cristo.
Some days you’re the pigeon, some days you’re the statue…just live with it!
And, speaking of statues, Old San Juan is filled with an array of awesome statuary, fountains and sculptures.
Above are two that we loved.
